Mosquito-Repelling Perennial Plants

Perennial plants are those that bloom all year and make it simple to keep pests, such as mosquitoes, out of your outdoor living area. Although I added one annual, these are the finest mosquito-repelling perennials.

1. Basil

Basil is not only delicious, but it also works as a mosquito repellant. Mosquitoes dislike the strong odor, so it should keep them at bay. Basil is growing in our 2X4′ planter that we just planted.

Basil thrives in direct sunlight, and we were fortunate enough to put it there. It works wonders for repelling mosquitoes and flies.

We discussed how having mint in your yard may help you make wonderful drinks. Fortunately, mint repels mosquitoes and has been shown to destroy their larvae. We didn’t realize it was a good deterrent when we acquired it, but we’ll keep adding more plants around since we enjoy the scent and because it can also be used to create delicious cocktails and simple syrups.

Keep them in their own pots since they are very tough and may quickly take over any space. Having mint on hand will make you feel like you have a green thumb.

3. Marigold flowers

We don’t cultivate annuals because if I’m going to worry about a plant, I want it to be able to flourish all year. However, to keep insects at bay, these men should be placed to your area. Pyrethrum is included in most insect repellant sprays. They may also be used as tomato companion plants since they repel many of the insects that attack tomatoes.

Geraniums with a Scent

Known as mosquito plant. We found one of these plants in the Lowe’s bargain isle and were pleased to discover that it is effective at repelling mosquitoes. It has a citronella aroma and may reach a height of 2 feet.

When we re-potted it from the smaller pot it was in, it grew to approximately that height. We have a hammock area and intend to add more of them around the hammocks since nothing is worse than attempting to sleep in a hammock while battling mosquitoes.

The citronella plant itself. You may use these clumping grasses to construct a barrier around your outdoor living space. We’ll be planting this grass along our deck now that we know the perfumed geraniums aren’t citronella.

Lemongrass, in addition to citronella grass, may be used to form a barrier around the perimeter of your outdoor living space. Lemongrass appeals to me because of its versatility. Lemongrass may be used in both recipes and drinks.

Lemon balm is a member of the mint family that is not only aromatic but also repellent to the blood sucking insects that everyone despises.

Lavender, number seven

Lavender repels insects and has a relaxing effect on people, which I enjoy. Lavender grown in abundance around your garden areas where you typically relax delivers a terrific double dosage.

Rosemary, number eight

Although I am not a big lover of rosemary, it is a fragrant shrub that repels insects. Plus, the herb may be used in a variety of dishes. The rosemary bread made by a local bakery is legendary. I think I ate too much of it, which is why I’m not a great fan of it now.

Because garlic can be used for so many ways, I appreciate that we can grow it for cooking and insect control. They may be grown in raised gardens and plant beds. They are effective against a variety of pests, not simply mosquitoes.

Catnip 10

Our cat isn’t a big fan of catnip, but since it also repels mosquitoes, we’ll acquire some for the backyard and see how she reacts. Catnip belongs to the mint family, so it should be simple to grow. They repel all pests in the garden, so keep an eye out for them and strategically place them about your outdoor living space.

How about the Sun? What are the preferences of plants?

Basil, mint, marigold, Lemon Balm, Lavender, Rosemary, Garlic, and Catnip all like full sun (at least 6-8 hours).

Scented Geraniums thrive in broad sun, but need moderate shade in the afternoons.

Citronella grass thrives in partially shaded environments.
